How to Lubricate Your Home’s Windows

Proper maintenance of your home’s windows ensures they operate smoothly and efficiently. Regular lubrication helps prevent sticking or hard-to-open windows and extends their lifespan.

Watch this step-by-step video to learn how to lubricate your windows.

How to Lubricate Your Windows

Why Lubricate Your Windows?

Lubricating your windows is important for:

  • Smooth Operation: Ensures windows open and close effortlessly.
  • Prevention of Sticking: Helps avoid the frustration of windows that get stuck or are difficult to operate.
  • Extended Lifespan: Reduces wear and tear on window components, extending their durability.

What Type of Lubricant Should You Use and Why?

For best results, use a lubricant designed for window tracks and moving parts. WD-40 or any siliconized sprays are excellent choices. They help loosen stuck parts, prevent rust, and are ideal because they don’t attract dust or debris, reducing friction and keeping your windows operating smoothly.

How Often Should You Lubricate Your Home’s Windows?

It’s recommended to lubricate your windows once a year to maintain smooth operation and prevent issues.

How Long Does This Process Take?

Lubricating your windows takes about 10-15 minutes, making it a quick yet valuable maintenance task.

What You’ll Need to Lubricate Your Windows:

  • WD-40 or any siliconized spray
  • A rag

Pro Tip: Periodically check the functionality of your windows to ensure they open and close smoothly and that the lock functions correctly.

How to Lubricate Your Home’s Windows:

  1. Unlock and Tilt the Window
Unlock the window, raise it six to eight inches, and pull out the tilt tabs to tilt the window out.

  2. Lubricate the Balance Rods
Apply lubricant to the balance rods on each side of the window.

  3. Test the Window
Squeeze the latches to close the window, then open and close it a few times to ensure it operates smoothly.

  4. Lock the Window
Once you’ve confirmed smooth operation, lock the window securely.

By following these steps and performing this maintenance annually, you’ll keep your windows functioning properly and extend their service life.
